Safe Harbor Compliance

As European Union privacy legislation is stricter than in many other parts of the world, companies operating in the EU are not allowed to send personal data to countries outside the European Union unless there is an adequate level of protection guaranteed.

Thus, in July 2000, the US Department of Commerce and the European Union agreed on the U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Framework developed by the Department of Commerce in coordination with the European Commission to allow US companies to certify they comply to the European privacy requirements.

The U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Framework provides guidance for U.S. organizations on how to provide adequate protection for personal data from the EU as required by the European Union's Directive on Data Protection.

Organizations must re-certify every 12 months. The certification status of a company can be checked on the Safe Harbor website of the US Department of Commerce.
